The Mag started two years ago as a visual mixtape to share with friends and has continued to grow with every issue. As many of you know, I published all 15 back issues with Magcloud. Now we’re full on CMYK. This ain’t no KINKO’S hack job, either. TEPSIC is now poster-sized (22″x36″) in BIG BOSS GLOSS and hand-folded. Internet-free. It was about a year ago that I got my first cat named Fritz, after Robert Crumb’s Fritz the Cat. If you’ve read the series, you know that Frtiz does whatever the hell he wants, no matter the law, lack of money, or even a plan to begin with. I hated Fritz for the first couple months of him living with my girlfriend and I. Constantly knocking over glass tumblers and sitting on our heads at night, I never got any sleep, which led to me regretting the mistake of having a cat in the beginning…even though I really had no choice to begin with…it was my girlfriend’s present one winter night. Fast forward a year later, and Fritz is now the reincarnation of myself in cat-form. I’m not alone. When Dayv (Page 24 & 25) and I were talking a CATS ONLY issue of the magazine, I had no idea that my inbox would be blowing up every day for the next month filled with people dressed as cats, paintings of cats, blind cats, cats found on the street, cats tattooed [...]

When Dayv (Page 24 & 25) and I were talking a CATS ONLY issue of the magazine, I had no idea that my inbox would be blowing up every day for the next month filled with people dressed as cats, paintings of cats, blind cats, cats found on the street, cats tattooed on people, cats puking, and cats with two sets of eyes. Cats have some weird special connection with their owners and the people they encounter. I wanted to celebrate a universal awesome before splitting for 2011, as my goodbye to the year ending, and a celebration for what’s coming next to TEPSIC.

So I caught up with Fritz, to ask him what he feels about this issue being CATS ONLY, and what he’s been up lately.

Thanks for taking out some time out of your busy schedule of licking yourself and not paying rent, Fritz. When you took a look through these pages, did you notice any of these cats?

Photography is about curiosity and being resourceful and recognizing the beauty, humor, and poetry in every day life. I try to approach all art making this way, i try to stay open and let it happen. Studio work is much slower and its more physical. I am excited about creating every day and seeing where it goes. what is one book that has changed your life? The Road by Cormack McCarthy. It’s a book about America after an atomic blast that was popular about 3 years ago. It was the first time I was able to read fiction and get fully emersed in it. I thought about that book for about a year after reading it, I think its descriptive writing style that makes it so interesting. what do you do when you’re not creating your art?

what’s your approach when it comes to photography? how does it differ from your approach to still life/studio work?

Usually riding my bike or hanging with people or just doing stuff to try to hold my life together. In the winter hopefully snowboarding.

what was your inspiration behind the colored sand pieces?

For the past 2 years I’ve been working on art that is not photographic. I think i found the colored sand on Amazon while i was looking for something else.
Most of the pieces i make don’t take very long to make and I am not usually in full control of how they will look. This is true for the sand pieces. I pour the
sand on panels that are coated with glue, I only see what they look like when the glue is removed. My friend said she thought they look like blurry photos.

what’s going on in all of these pictures of people sneaking under that fence

Those were taken at a reggae concert in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. I think climbing or going under a fence is a classic rebelious act and i thought it was just cool to see a large group of people doing it and helping each other. I think they are funny.

which artists are an influence on you?

Mike Kelley, the guy that did the early Powell Peralta graphics, Ari Marcopoous, Hanna Liden, Richard Prince, my brother, William Eggleston, there are a lot of them. I don’t think there is any one super artist but there are many that have little bits that i like.

what’s your favorite scent of incense?

I don’t stray away from Nag Champa, once in a while someone will give me some that is another scent and that is cool to break it up. I just like watching the smoke go up into the air and out the window.

sickest thing you’ve ever done?

80 foot gap, double heel clicker, jet ski

who are you listening to lately?

Right now, Black Sabbath. Lately its been a bunch of hip hop, new Jay Z n’ Kanye, ASAP ROCKY, wayne, etc. I listen to reggae almost all the time and when im sleeping turned down really low.

do you believe in ghosts? if so, have you encountered one?

I have had some “oh that was weird” moments, but I have never seen a real ghost.

where’s the first place you would take an extra terrestrial?

I would call the cops and let them deal with him/her. I’m kidding, i think it would be cool to go get a burrito with him or her.

plans for 2012?

I think it will be more of the same, making tons of new work, hanging with my girlfriend Maia.

what’s your favorite dish and where can we get it?

I like the grill cheese, fries and a shake from In n’ Out Burger in California.

first off, tell us who you are and what you’ve been doing lately.

I was born in denmark in 1973 . my dad is jeweler and my mom is retired. I have a twin brother Troels who is an artist as well. I currently live in Chinatown NYC I walk everyday to my studio in the lower east side. If I could describe myself I would say that my talent in life is within me more than following the path there was present for me by the system. Or in other words I always have had self confidence in finding my own way of doing things at an early age when I was trying to fit in somewhere. I was very early on attracted to subcultures and to self expressions. I remember seeing the hare krishna as a kid and I always felt curious how they could just be like that and not be part of the obligations in society. I would watch them for hours doing their dances on the streets of Copenhagen. Lately I have been working on my next book hester due to be released in September by Morel Books. I’m also going to be in a museum show in Düsseldorf next year. I have lived in new york city since 2007 and I have no formal education.

when did your career as a photographer begin, and what has it eventually led to?

At the end of my high school time I spent a week interning at a newspaper. After that week I remember I had a feeling of self confidence and I just kept on showing up after that one week and it turned into 7 years. In the beginning I did a lot crime scene stuff and later I mainly photographed for magazines and advertising clients. I started wrong in 2006 and that led to this thing where I use photography like an artifact. That’s my story.

your latest series, hester is a different change of pace than wrong. what inspired you to begin a project working with the female nude in such an abstract way?

It was a natural progression for me to move away from the expectations of photography and how you build it. In other words I want to set myself free of the form to be more precise with who I was as an artist. At the same time I got a lot more interested in anything else than photography work. I now feel like someone who creates work in lack of belonging to anything or anywhere.
do you get spooked out working on any of your photos? it seems like there’s a general sense of almost morbid humor to make some of these.

That has been times where I couldn’t look at it. Like times where I felt mentally wrecked and could deal with the compilations of thinking out the work.

THERE HAVE BEEN DAYS COMING INTO THE STUDIO THINKING ….IS THIS REALLY ME.

how do you imagine such uneventful photo concepts in your head before you even begin working on a piece?

For a reason it can be hard to explain. But it comes from feelings or images that come to my mind. It can come in the most empty moments between what is right or wrong or something I heard or saw that gives me that state of mind.

are you constantly snapping photos and just collecting them until you find things that work?

Yes and no. But the pieces can also occur from very old material that I have taken in the past. My work involves building or finding props. I have images that I have been working on for more than two years. It’s a very calm and patient process where I really take my time.

i think your pictures are less of a way for “capturing a moment” for you, and more like taking photography to a surrealist level. what’s your take on you photography using this style?

Images from wrong are about a moment, but also about props that I construct. with hester it’s different since I see it’s more as a collecting process of material. In order for me to assemble my goals. I almost don’t care about the location and the setting. I like the feel that it’s something I build in my studio for many hours and maybe took a picture afterwards with a camera. Like a pure low life registration of something that has no value.

do you think the human form is almost “too perfect” sometimes? why are you so good at making things look so abstract?

I like the essentials of life and I like when the essentials can depart from its original purpose and become something else. But alterations is a balance how far you aesthetically can take your story. So I use what I have in front of me..when I created wrong parts of it came from stock I had in my freezer. I’m just really lazy and I believe that what I’m supposed to work with is the most basic elements. Most often great things happen when you don’t expect it and are not planning them out. But I’m also just lucky in the sense that it just happens anyway. For the more technical note I work with a very organic mind set. Meaning that I keep everything consistent with light and shadows. But that part is all about concentration and keeping a clear reference to how things look out there. So it’s a merge between imaginations and technicalities.

what do you do when you’re not making these photos?

I‘m mainly home or attending new york city art stuff. I’m also a disciplined runner and I like running everyday. I also have a few friends that i keep in touch with. I strive to live a very simple life.

who is your biggest influence artistically?

On so many levels. I like Bellmer, Bacon, Baldessari. I also have an ongoing communication and influence from my twin-brother Troels. Who is a very skilled artist. In general I’m influenced by anything new or anyone who can be visionary with their materials.

ONE TIME I HAD SURGERY AND I GOT THIS ROUND BLOODY THING REMOVED FROM MY HEAD AND A FEW DAYS AFTER WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT I WAS MAKING THIS ROUND SHAPE IN MY COMPUTER.

So most of the times I can be influenced by the most random things.

what is your favorite dish, and where can we get it.

Food from south east asia or burgers.
